(Photo by Pat Brough) Easthampton, MA - On Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 the 3rd Annual Easthampton WinterFest will be held in locations throughout the city. WinterFest is a day-long event celebrating winter, family fun, and Easthampton's historic past in the ice harvesting industry.
Outdoor activities will be held at the pond and throughout the city, including nature walks at Arcadia, wagon rides by Blue Star Equiculture, a draft horse rescue farm, snowman making contest at Nonotuck Park's Daley Field, wilderness survival camp, and much more. There will also be plenty of indoor activities, including a pancake breakfast at Trinity Lutheran Church, the competitive chili cook-off at Eastworks and a special family matinee of the movie, "Frozen" held at the Williston Northampton School Chapel. One of the highlights of the day is an Historical Ice Harvest demonstration on Nashawannuck Pond. Participants can try their hands at using a pond saw to "harvest" blocks of ice as they learn about Easthampton's part in the area's ice industry. The day wraps up with a pond-side community bonfire as Easthampton City Arts+ continues the celebration with Fire and Ice ArtWalk. The event is FREE - donations are encouraged. Bring the kids, grandparents, friends and out of area visitors and make it a day in Easthampton! The festival is coordinated by the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee and is a fundraising event created to bring awareness to the public about ongoing efforts needed to keep Nashawannuck Pond healthy for generations to come. More information about sponsorship, volunteering and an updated list of activities may be found on the pond's website: www.nashawannuckpond.org
