Volunteers are asked to sign up for a 3 or 4 hour shift online and will check in at the Municipal Lot at 50 Payson Ave. on the day of the event. Bring gloves, contractor bags, rakes, brooms, weeding tools, etc. Wheelbarrows are appreciated if mulching. Don’t forget to bring your phone! This year the the clean up will include the use of Litterati, an app which allows users to geo-tag the location and type of litter they find. Using hashtags and uploading images of the litter to a database, a map is created of the local community, showing where significant sources of litter are found. This data can be used to help change behaviors. More information on Litterati may be found on their website: http://www.litterati.org. Easthampton, MA - On Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 the 5th Annual Easthampton WinterFest will be held in locations throughout the city. The day long festival is coordinated by the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee and is a fundraising event created to bring public awareness about ongoing efforts needed to keep Nashawannuck Pond healthy for generations to come. All activities are free to attend. Donations are gladly accepted and sponsorship opportunities are available. Activities include an Historical Ice Harvest on Nashawannuck Pond by noted historian, Dennis Picard. Participants can try their hands at using a pond saw to "harvest" blocks of ice as they learn about Easthampton's part in the area's ice industry. Wagon rides by Blue Star Equiculture, Nature Hikes at Arcadia, snow sculpting and carving and a Meet & Greet with Hilltown Sled Dogs are also planned as well as a Community Bonfire with music by the Mill River Rounders. Indoor activities include a Craft & Vendor Fair with over 80 vendors, a kid’s magic and comedy show, the movie “Frozen” on the big screen, and the annual Chili Cook Off. Art and Valentine workshops will be at MAP Gallery, the library and Big Wheel Press and WinterFest On Tap features Standing Bear Band at Abandoned Building Brewery. A scavenger hunt and city-wide snow sculpture contest is in the planning stages! Bring the kids, grandparents, friends and out of area visitors and make it a day in Easthampton. After WinterFest, be sure to stay for ArtWalk. More information about sponsorship and volunteering will be available on the pond's website: www.nashawannuckpond.org.
