Nashawannuck Pond Welcomes The Holidays

They say it takes a village . . . . It sure does, especially when working out the logistics of the long standing tradition of creating a visual lighting display on the pond.  A group of semi-secret "elves" led by Mike LaValley, owner of The Brass Cat, made sure that the tree shined its light for all to see for more than twenty years. After a year's absence, a number of volunteers decided to bring the tradition back and worked hard to gather supplies and labor to make it happen.

In late November, a tree was once again donated by Mrs. Mumblo who had a Christmas Tree Farm for many years in town. The Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee, led by Paul Nowak, Pat Brough from Finck and Perras Insurance Co., volunteers and equipment from Williston Northampton School, Chief Alberti from the Easthampton Police Dept. and Dan Whiteley, of Whiteley Electric who supplied the technical lighting knowledge and electrical power made it all happen.  Paul put his boat captain license to good work as he guided the tree by boat to its resting spot.

The pond lighting display joins the light on Mt. Tom as a symbol. Let the light shine each night as we keep in mind what a wonderful, caring community we are lucky to have. Pasqualina Azzarello, our City Arts Coordinator, says it best. . . "Easthampton, a little city with a big heart."

Easthampton, MA  - On Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020 the 7th Annual Easthampton WinterFest will be held in locations throughout the city. The festivities begin Friday evening with the screening of "The Story of Nashawannuck Pond" and a short introduction to "Albert Kiesling", held at Easthampton Media in conjunction with ArtWalk. The festival is organized by the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee and is a fundraising event created to bring public awareness about ongoing efforts needed to keep Nashawannuck Pond healthy for generations to come.  Most activities are free to attend due to generous business sponsorship, and are family friendly. Easthampton Plans Annual Clean Up Day
Easthampton, MA April 4, 2019  - The annual Easthampton Clean Up Day is scheduled for Sunday May 5, from 8:00AM - 1:00PM.  Volunteers will meet at the Municipal Lot at 50 Payson Street to check in. They are asked to bring rakes, gloves, contractor bags, weeding tools, etc. Volunteers are asked to sign up online for a 2 or 4 hour shift. https://www.nashawannuckpond.org/clean-up-day.html
“Easthampton Clean Up Day is spring cleaning for our community.” said Liz Provo, a member of the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee, organizer of the event in partnership with Easthampton City Arts and the Friends of the Manhan Rail Trail.
This year the pond committee is also partnering with WE "Water Walk" which will be held at the White Brook Middle School track starting at 1PM. This is a great family fundraising event.  The pond committee will have a table providing information on the pond and our local award-winning water. Food will be available. The public is asked to make a donation and will be able to carry 3 - 5 gallon jugs of water around the track, simulating what people around the world must do without access to clean drinking water.

ABOUT NASHAWANNUCK POND STEERING COMMITTEE
The Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee is an advisory committee to the City of Easthampton. Their mission is to make recommendations regarding the health of the pond, to educate the public about the need to keep the pond healthy and to build community awareness by organizing events like WinterFest, Ride The Dragon, Story Walk at Nonotuck Park and other projects.

With over 13,000 attendees, the 5th Annual Cultural Chaos was a monumental success. Nashawannuck Pond is part of the Cottage Street Cultural District, and is an entry point for the district.  We were thrilled to be a part of this event, the theme being "Show Us Your Culture".

Our culture is:
  1. The stewardship of Nashawannuck Pond - keeping it healthy for generations to come
  2. Educating the public about restorative and ongoing projects to maintain the health of the pond.
  3. Raising funds to support our efforts to keep the pond the centerpiece of Easthampton for generations to come.
We encourage you to wear your T-shirts and Sweatshirts proudly.  Purchase our beautiful notecards (created by pond committee member and avid kayaker and nature lover, Beth Tiffany) and give them to family members and others who love the pond.
